Launch of Good Screenings
Launch of Good Screenings
The Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation has joined forces with director Franny Armstrong, to launch Good Screenings - a new film distribution website, which allows anyone, anywhere to hold their own screening of the best social justice documentary films and, crucially, to keep the profits for their own campaign or pocket.
Using the website's simple booking system, anyone can buy a licence to screen in their school, church, workplace, museum, scout hut or wherever. The license fee is calculated according to who they are, where they plan to screen and how many viewers they're expecting. 'The Age of Stupid' team pioneered this new method of film distribution in 2009 and realized they were on to a winner when more than 1300 screenings were booked in the first six months - generating more than UKP 100,000 for the film's "crowd-funders" and many thousands more for numerous campaigns. The film played in NHS wards, church halls, in fields and even at a garden centre (the first film ever screened there).
Franny Armstrong says "Too many fantastic documentaries end up on the filmmaker's shelf as distributors don't think there's money to be made in saving the world. Good Screenings means that good films can be seen by good people and hopefully inspire lots of good action. It's a win win win."

Lee Daniels Masterclass
The remarkably gifted producer-turned-director discusses his work, including his powerful new feature Precious which he directed and produced: based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. In this deeply moving and powerful film, Daniels expertly balances the absolute horror of the title character's experience with humour and fantasy, and proves that all of the heart and soul he puts into his films is definitely paying off. Daniels will offer us an insight into his approach to filmmaking and discuss his work with film critic and journalist Mike Goodridge. When: 24 Oct, 2009
Time: 1pm
Venue: NF1
Few people have the qualities needed to be a successful producer and even fewer have those needed to be a successful director. Lee Daniels' natural skills as a producer allowed him to make Monster's Ball (for which Halle Berry won an Oscar) as his first film.

A masked rapper – known only as Nobody – is creating a huge buzz online with a track called Jerusalem. The track - which borrows from William Blake’s classic poem - is a satirical poke at contemporary British life, set against a funky electro melody and an infectious bassline.
Music chat rooms and blogs have been buzzing with speculation as to the true identity of the rapper, the names Dizzee Rascal, Skepta, Ty, Pyrelli, PNids, DPS and Sway have all been mentioned. Yesterday, in a new twist the mysterious rapper released an accompanying video to the track. In the hilarious video, Nobody and crew kidnap The Queen and take her on a tour of the real British way of life. Viewers follow Nobody (and Liz) on a side-splitting tour of his the local chip shop, his east London flat and the Prince of Wales ... the pub, that is.

Wilmington, North Carolina hosts Eighth Annual Cine Noir Black Film Festival
Wilmington, North Carolina hosts Eighth Annual Cine Noir Black Film Festival, March 12-15, 2009
Wilmington, North Carolina (NC) hosted its Eighth Annual Cine Noir Black Film Festival to a capacity audience starting March 12 with the directorial debut of stage and scene star Giancarlo Esposito’s, Gospel Hill. The feature length movie was filmed in the Rock Hill, South Carolina area. It is a rural town near the new banking capital of the United States, Charlotte, NC.
Gospel Hill has a multi-generational, racial, and class conflict story line. It’s based in a Southern, agricultural setting which is challenged by plant closing and tourist development. There is a forty year old unresolved murder of human rights activist Paul Malcolm (Samuel L. Jackson) and its impact on the community and his son, John Malcolm (Danny Glover) and daughter-in-law and school teacher, Sarah Malcolm (Angela Bassett). Also featured in the movie are Tom Bower, Giancarlo Esposito and Julie Stiles. Esposito received the first annual Ovation Award for outstanding contribution to African-American cinema.
Welcoming the Cine Noir festival, its patrons and movie lovers from New York to Atlanta were the Mayor of Wilmington, Bill Saffo, and New Hanover County Commissioner, Jonathan Barfield, Jr. For eight years members of the Wilmington arts community have invited and had a juried selection submission process. The film festival was based at the Cameron Art Museum. It showed shorts, documentaries, features, animation, comedy, senior camera and student productions. Wilmington, NC has the largest film production center east of California. The Secret Life of Bees and over 250 movies and television productions have been filmed there.
During the four days of showings and discussions with film editors, directors, actors and film industry personnel there was a spirit of camaraderie and artistic sharing. Annually, at the closing ceremonies cash awards are given in several categories. In 2009 the awarded recipients were:
Shorts:
1st Place - "Two Joints, Three Condoms, and a Dog Named Fifi" directed by Jeruvia
2nd Place - "Do You" directed by Gordon S. Williams
3rd Place - "When the Shoe's on the Other Foot" directed by Gary C. Hughes
Documentaries:
1st Place - "Daddy Hunger" by Ray Upchurch
2nd Place - "Ursula Rucker: Poet" by Michael Dennis
3rd Place - "One Little Difference" by Elan Sobel
The responses to the films Daddy Hunger and When the Shoe’s on the Other Foot were very emotional. The issue of the absence of a father in a families’ life in Daddy Hunger and women abusing their spouses and other family members in When the Shoe’s on the Other Foot created lively, painful discussions and tears.
On Friday night, after the showing of Ursula Rucker: Poet, directed by Michael J. Dennis there were samplings of the Carolina’s spoke word community. Local radio personality, Bigg B hosted a hip-hop open microphone into the late night. Saturday afternoon student productions included Seeing It in Color: Remembering the Canetuck Rosenwald School, directors Claudia Stack and Kyle Holt. Another youth production on Sunday was Mr. Bones directed by Nathan Ross Freeman, with student actors from the Winston-Salem (NC) Youth Arts Institute. The senior selection was the humorous, Gotta Dance by Dori Berinstein. The Saturday youth and senior screenings were free to the public. In total, nineteen films were shown.

Researchers Wanted
Researchers wanted for Barack Obama Documentary
Ex-bfm Film Festival participant, Clive Grandison (Evergreen Man, 2007), is making documentary about President Barack Obama and needs your help. 100 Days in 100 Years (working title) is in post-production. It is a feature documentary inspired by the inauguration of President Barack Obama, to be screened in April/May to coincide with and celebrate the 100th day of the Obama administration.
The film will look at British people that travelled to America for the inauguration and ask why they went. The premise of the film suggests that a path was laid that accepted / allowed Barack Obama. It explores the idea of a path laid for a black prime minister of Britain by previous generations of black British leaders, personalities and icons.
This exploration will start 100 years back and chart; compare the African-American and black British experience over the last hundred years. The film is to inspire the idea that the world is an ‘ouster’ for all in it and we can do anything we put our minds too. We are currently seeking more researchers and roles for the various different departments in filmmaking.

Trust launches Let’s Get Tested - a new film competition for 15-25 year olds
Sexual health and HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), in partnership with Abbott, has launched an exciting new competition called Let’s Get Tested. The competition, which closes on February 28th, aims to highlight the importance of sexual health by asking young people aged
15 – 25 to make a short film about getting regularly tested for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The winner of the competition will receive £2,000 and the opportunity to work with a leading British director or producer to professionally make their film.
Gareth Davies at Terrence Higgins Trust said: “Young people represent only 12% of the population, but account for nearly half of all STIs diagnosed in GUM clinics across the UK in 2007. With that in mind it’s especially important that young people know the facts about HIV and sexual health. If you’re under 25 and want to have your say on Let’s Get Tested, we’d love to hear from you! “
Films can be made by a group of people or individually, using a video camera or a webcam. To enter simply visit www.letsgettested.org.uk to register and upload your film. Films will be uploaded onto YouTube at www.youtube.com/letsgettested where visitors to the site can watch and rate them. When the competition closes, an expert panel will review the films with the highest average score and ten finalists will be invited to a VIP reception where the winner will be announced.
To be eligible for the competition, films need to be factually accurate, not be offensive, respect copyright laws, and be made by UK residents aged between 15 and 25.
For more information and to submit your film visit www.letsgettested.org.uk.
