Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness

Film info:
At a time when physical anthropology dominated the debate on race, renowned American anthropologist Melville J. Herskovits (1895 – 1963) defended the idea that it was cultural practice and not biology that determined behaviour. He illustrated his point by studying how African-Americans were still the carriers of African culture. But “how come a white man knew so much about black people?” It is this paradox that the film tries to resolve, through careful historical research, clever use of archive footage – including propaganda cartoons, and comments from leading historians and philosophers. The result is a quick-paced, inventive and groundbreaking documentary that educates and entertains.
