Film info: Produced and narrated by Chris Rock, the award-winning documentary Good Hair is an attempt by the world-famous comedian to answer a seemingly innocent question asked by his 4-year-old daughter: “How come I don’t have good hair?” Good hair being “white hair”, long, shiny and straight, as opposed to natural African hair, which is coarse, nappy and allegedly impossible to manage. African-American women spend $ 9 billion a year chasing the dream of good hair, relaxing their kinky curls, wearing weaves, extensions or wigs.
It’s this sensitive topic, both a sociological phenomenon and a booming industry that Chris Rock investigates. His quest takes him from the barbershops and salons of Harlem to scientific laboratories and Hindu temples of India – where hair is harvested. Along the way, Chris Rock prompts his guests – icon Maya Angelou, actress Nia Long, politician Al Sharpton or rapping duo Salt’n Pepa, to define good hair. Their candid answers along with Rock’s quick-witted jokes and refreshing banter make for a well-crafted, insightful and hugely entertaining documentary.
Screening followed by a Q&A with Executive Producer Nelson George and a DJ night at the BFI with Charlie Dark of Blacktronica.
