- Issue 2 - Friday, 09 October, 2009
Dear Readers,
I almost fell over with excitement when it was announced that Chris Rock's Good Hair is going to open the 11th bfm International Film Festival. Good hair and good times that's what I say. Join us and the producer of the film, who is doing a post-show Q+A on Friday, 06 November at the bfi for the most anticipated movie of the season.

As we get into the swing of Black History Month don't forget bfm's free screenings continue next week with the The Street Children of Kinshasha.
An unflinching look at the plight of the young Congolese children forced to live on the streets of Kinshasa. The film is divided into two parts, with the first one featuring a short history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
To celebrate Black History Month this October the BFI is releasing two acclaimed modern Black British films on DVD this October - including Playing Away by Horace Ové and Young Soul Rebels by Celebrated artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien. Whilst the latter is a powerful drama that explores the social and sexual tensions that arise in a community following the murder of a local black gay man the former is a comedy of manners, in which a West Indian cricket team from Brixton travel to a Suffolk village to play against the local team.
Black History Season is now underway in Camden, with a packed programme of challenging, entertaining and thought provoking events. Building on the success of last season’s audience of over 18,000, this year’s event programme focuses on the world of science – from science fact to science fiction.
With contributions from key figures from the world of science, and Camden’s own wealth of local talent, including Professor Steve Jones, a leading expert on genetics, and Dr Maggie Aderin, an astrophysicist who commented on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo landings for the BBC, the events run until mid November.
The bfm International Film Festival is proud to announce that this year’s festival will open on November 6th, with Good Hair, the award-winning, documentary co-written and produced by Chris Rock.
The film - a recipient of A Special Jury Prize, at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, - was prompted by Chris Rock’s young daughter asking, “Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" Rock says: “She was only five at the time and she was already having concerns about her hair – she’s already having hair envy. I felt I needed to understand more deeply how these issues are related: African-American women and their hair”.
Good Hair includes firsthand, often hysterical, accounts of black women’s attitudes about their hair – and ultimately reveals their feelings about their own beauty and self-esteem. Rock visits beauty salons and hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples to explore the way hairstyles impact the activities, purses, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of the black community.
He was shocked to discover the financial investment black women make in their hair – many regularly spending thousands of dollars a year on the best extensions and weaves – and sitting in a salon for up to eight hours at a time to get it done.
